The Tijeras Institute is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt educational film company. We’ve made many award winning films for public television, educational institutions and organizations. All donations are tax exempt.
The Cannabis Conundrum is a documentary film Ned Judge and I are making about the future of medical cannabis. But since grant funding opportunities are few--we’re asking for your help to finish it with your tax-deductible donation.
The idea for a film began to take shape when my colleagues and I at the University of New Mexico pain clinic began to realize that our patients were benefiting from medical cannabis. We’ve seen folks with chronic pain able to decrease and even stop their opiate medications, and patients with PTSD, cancer, and seizures who’ve had their symptoms improved without having to take other medications with distressing side-effects.
At the same time, doctors and their patients are frustrated by the illogical and downright dumb federal restrictions which, for decades, have prohibited the kind of basic research that would help us understand what strains and dosages might be helpful for specific conditions.
In January, a National Academy of Sciences report of over 10,000 medical cannabis studies (mostly done abroad) supports our and others’ anecdotal observations about the primary conditions that cannabis seem to benefit, and where more and better research is needed.
The medical conditions we’ll focus on are:
Pain---At least 5 high-quality studies show cannabis’s analgesic efficacy, and evidence shows it may help in reducing opiate use.
PTSD---We’ll follow the first NIH sanctioned study of veterans, and interview psychiatrists and patients who already know it’s helpful.
Epilepsy---A recent study in The New England Journal of Medicine showed a decrease in
seizures of almost 50% in children with a severe form of epilepsy.
Cancer---Cannabis has been effective in treating symptoms of cancer, particularly nausea, vomiting, anxiety and loss of appetite.
The Cannabis Conundrum will help patients, families, and the general public understand what we do know—and what we hope to find out about these 4 conditions---and some others. We’ll talk to patients, practitioners, policy makers, and basic science and clinical researchers.
We’ll film in New Mexico and some key places around the country. Our film will air first on KNME, New Mexico PBS, and we have their encouragement and endorsement of our work-in- progress. This will also help us gain national distribution on PBS and other documentary outlets.
We’ve filmed a lot already, but have more to do to wrap up an important documentary. We hope to raise $50,000 for completion. And best of all, Tijeras films is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, so there’s a tax write-off in addition to your name in the credits.
Thanks so much for your time, and please pass this on to folks you think might be interested.
